Get Fit Without Really Trying

Tuesday, January 27th, 2009

By: Stephanie A. Catchings, Health & Beauty Editor

5 Ways to Boost Your Activity Level without Working Out

  1. 1. Turn baby sitting into play time with the kids.
Instead of talking on the phone or watching TV with your younger siblings or babysitting clients, go outside and play. Some fun active games are “Red Light, Green Light” or “Freeze Tag.” Not only will you and the kids get some good exercise and a few laughs, but you can also get them tired enough to take a nap and give you some free time later.

  1. 2. Take the stairs in public places rather than using the elevator or escalator.
Taking the stairs helps to burn calories and tone leg muscles. Taking those few extra steps can make the difference in changing those chicken legs or dimpled thighs into show-stopping limbs.

  1. 3. Park farther away from the entrance to buildings and stores where you intend to shop.
Rather than scouring the parking lot for the spot nearest the door, park in the rear of the lot and walk briskly to the entry door. Be careful to do this only when the area is well lit and populated by others who can help you in case of an emergency.

  1. 4. Use canned vegetables for more than eating.
The vitamins found in vegetables can boost energy levels when part of a balanced diet. However, using canned vegetables as hand weights can also help shape your muscles and strength your grip. While watching television or lounging around the house, hold the canned good in one hand and do short controlled bicep curls for a period of about 15 minutes per arm. Catching a rerun of CSI or Gossip Girl never made you look this good!

  1. 5. Spruce up the garden in the yard once a week.
Gardening may seem like a pastime for the elderly but in actuality, it truly is a wonderful way to burn calories, get sunlight and do something that you will eventually be proud of. With spring quickly approaching, pulling weeds, spreading mulch and planting new flowers can become a relaxing way for anyone to stretch their muscles and work up a light sweat. Scan a few horticulture books to see which plants would work well in your area to maximize your gardening efforts.

*As with any health care regimen, speak with a physician before beginning any vigorous activity, especially in the presence of a pre-existing medical condition.*

HARDLY DAMAGED!!!

Monday, January 26th, 2009

By: Mical J. Roy, Entertainment Editor

Our lives are filled with inspiration from so many angles! Passions that drive us to achieve, believe, and dream efficiently. We dare to be bold, chilling, and eccentric…some of us dare, and some of us just do! No matter how far we are pushed to be like the masses, there are many of us who draw our own inscriptions on the wall, and watch as the masses follow our lead. We are essentially applauded for our efforts in the evolution of difference and change. We are celebrated for going against the grain and it’s the minimal difference that keeps us larger than life.

It’s mid-day on a finicky Houston day; the weather is unpredictable, many still bare their jackets from the freezing morning, as the sun adorns the sky. I’d been waiting so patiently to speak with the emphasis, trendy songbird we all know as D. Woods, formerly of Danity Kane/ Making the Band. Would she be open to this interview with a personality that mirrored what we see on television and on the stage or would she be worlds apart? There was only one way to know, and the big reveal was vastly approaching.

My blackberry blasts amid a quiet office space as I sat awaiting the call. It was Ms. Woods publicists’, Mr. Curry, whom I’d been speaking with over the past week or so, treacherously working to schedule me at least a small moment of D. Woods’ time. “Can you interview her now, she’s available”, he boasts! Just like that, my interview with D would begin. Mr. Curry told me he’d hang up with me, and call back with her on the line. Again, my phone chimed, as if an alarm clock at the right time.

“Hello there D. Woods”, I greeted poetically. Her response would set the tone for the rest of our short, yet lengthy conversation. “Heyyyyyyyyyyy what’s up?” she retorted. It was as if we were just catching up on lost time as opposed to an interview. It felt really good to finally speak with Ms. Woods and to be welcomed in such a warm fashion from her. I know you all are going to enjoy my interview with her.

I’d asked D. Woods the first thing that came to my mind. She seemed like such a born entertainer, from her 54.11 Reeboks, prom dress décor, to her attitude, she seemed ultimately born to be in the industry. Even being apart of a group, she always made an easy effort to separate herself from the name and identify better yet solidifying her individuality.

TCM: Was there another career you thought you may have wanted to pursue when you were younger?

D. WOODS: No, actually I’ve been in performing arts since I was 3 years old. It’s been different aspects of entertainment.

TCM: What are 3 things that you can’t live without?

D. WOODS: My phone, music (IPOD/LAPTOP), and my hair appointments.

TCM: Where do you get your inspiration from writing songs?

D. WOODS: Everything…I take in a lot, I watch a lot of movies/live performances. LL COOL J’s muscles were very inspiring!

TCM: What are your words of encouragement to chic teens trying to make it into the industry?

D. WOODS: I would definitely say to know your craft, and keep getting better because you could never have enough practice or knowledge. Always work on yourself and be true to self!

TCM: How would you describe your style?

D. WOODS: I would definitely say I’m a bit of a chameleon and I can mesh with whomever.

TCM: Tell us about any future projects you have in mind?

D. WOODS: I’m definitely doing a lot of writing in the studio, some performances and events coming up for the latter part of the year. I also have a film coming up that I’m about to start production on. I’m developing a workout video, so be on the lookout for all these things.

TCM: Will we see you on the big screen anytime soon?

D. WOODS: Well…that’s always a big question mark. The Girl’s Club (another group that D. Woods has been a member of prior to joining Danity Kane) will probably be putting together some more mix tapes as well.

TCM: What keeps you grounded?

D. WOODS: I would certainly have to say God and a lot of good friends around me. All my friends and I are all working towards the same goals we’ve been working on since High School.

TCM: What was the first thing that you bought when you got your first pay check?

D.WOODS: I’m still waiting on my first pay check (laughing). When I got my first substantial check that I could actually do something with, I put a big chunk down on Sallie Mae for my student loans.

Danity Kane - New Music - More Music Videos

TCM: What is your favorite collaboration so far?

D. WOODS: My favorite collab is always when I’m working with the Girl’s Club. I was really happy when Chanel (a member of The Girl’s Club) wrote the song entitled “Key to My Heart” and it made the album.

TCM: What would be your dream collaboration?

D. WOODS: My dream collab would be to work with Andre 3000 and I’m waiting for that perfect opportunity.

TCM: Give us some insight about you that your fans really don’t know.

D. WOODS: Well there are so many layers to me. I can be very academic, thought provoking, and fuse it all with entertainment. I hadn’t been able to express that artistic side, especially having been apart of a 5 girl group.

TCM: With reality TV the way it is, can we expect to see you with a TV show soon? Perhaps, “D. Woods NOT DAMAGED”?

D. WOODS: I’m not sure. Reality TV may not be where I want to be, since I’ve done reality TV before. I sometimes feel like if you give people too much, they don’t miss you.

TCM: Who are your favorite artists that are out right now?

D.WOODS: Oooooh, I’m a big fan of Estelle and she was inducted into the Girls Club. I like M.I.A., Andre 3000 and Outkast. I’m definitely a Hip Hop head. I love Jay-Z, Rick Ross, Kanye, and Weezy. I don’t care what anyone says, I love Chris Brown. I really can’t put my finger on it, but I just love his energy.

TCM: What do you like to do for fun?

D.WOODS: I like dancing and choreographing, putting events together that we (her and her crew) can show out on. We love big birthday events. My birthday was last July so we made a tour for my bday, and it was full of different groups; So Roc City came out and performed with me. I also like going to the movies and going skating…cutting people in line. LOL!

TCM: What album are you bumping really hard right now?

D. WOODS: Oh wow…I’m gonna throw you off a little bit. I go on ITUNES and I buy a bunch of old school stuff so right now I’m jamming Bobby McFerrin and I love mix tapes, like Grassroots stuff.

TCM: What is your biggest indulgence?

D. WOODS: Definitely sneakers, I love 54.11’s

More “Benjamin” than Franklin

Monday, January 26th, 2009

By: Mical J. Roy, Entertainment Editor

A Sound that Money Can’t Buy

If you’ve ever heard “Benjamin” Franklin’s music, you know he’s surely on his way straight to the top. One thing is for sure, this young man believes enough in his music and himself that you are destined to join the movement. Franklin’s sense of humor and strong determination for life are going to be the reason we view him on the big screen sooner than later.

Benjamin Franklin, a name that is equally aligned with MONEY. It’s not a catchy Hip Hop name he came up with one night while writing in the studio, it’s actually his given name. A very strong name, that’s sure to get him added attention in the industry, it’s perfectly connected with his personality and his indulgence for the sounds he develops for his fans.

Mr. Franklin is taking everyday in sheer stride, not rushing the moment, as he’s certain it’s soon to arrive. He is inhaling and exhaling the blessings as they come to him, and disposing of negativity continuously along the way. Baggage tends to slow one down from meeting their goals. Much like Benjamin Franklin, the artist and the human being, his interview was anything but common. Teen Chic readers, meet Benjamin Franklin!!

TCM:  When did you initially get into music?

BENJAMIN FRANKLIN: I’ve been involved in music all my life. Since about 7 years old, I’ve been in all kinds of choirs and in middle school I started a band. It was just something that was in me. No one forced me into music; I just wanted to do it. I began seriously pursuing it as a career when I turned 18.

TCM: What keeps you driven in terms of your music and your dreams?

BENJAMIN FRANKLIN: The idea of positively helping and affecting others keeps me driven.  When I first began pursuing music, my drive was kind of shallow.  I knew I was uniquely talented and loved music, so a career doing what I enjoyed the most seemed like the perfect option for me. As time went by, I started to experience some setbacks and I had to find purpose in it to continue fulfilling my dream. I think I’ve finally and just recently did that this past year.

TCM: Explain your journey at this point?

BENJAMIN FRANKLIN: As I stated earlier, I began seriously chasing (as I call it) when I turned eighteen. It was strange, but on my birthday that year it seemed as if nothing else mattered and all my focus and my time went directly to “making it”. During the next couple of years I entered talent shows, recorded demos, went on auditions, sung at events, and participated in music conferences. Anything that had any kind of opportunity, I did it. At the end of 2006, I decided to leave college and just go for it and that was definitely a huge turning point for me. That was the first time I left a comfort zone. Fortunately for me, a couple of months later I got an opportunity to be a songwriter at a major studio. While there, I got to see big artists from Justin Timberlake to Lil Wayne and observe how they worked and carried themselves.

I thought that studio was where I was supposed to be and my ticket to the top. Actually, I wanted that to be where I was supposed to be. There was opportunity everywhere, but nothing was really moving for me as I had hoped.  Deep in my heart I knew that it was not my time or place to make it, so I followed my intuition and left.

After some serious soul searching and focusing, I decided to make my own way. With the help of a friend of mine, I started to write more songs and ended up putting together an independent EP (single) that I just released in December entitled CONSTRUCTION PAPER.  I’m a little nervous, but now I feel like I am definitely a more solid artist headed in a very positive direction.

TCM: Is Benjamin Franklin your real name? If so, what made you stick with your “Government” name as opposed to a catchy name like B. Frank etc?

BENJAMIN FRANKLIN: Yes, Benjamin Franklin is my real name but I actually just go by “Benjamin” now. I made that change (along with a lot of others) at the top of last year. My full name was starting to feel like a gimmick…and not a good one. Everyone who wanted to work on projects with me ALWAYS thought the cover of my CD should have my face in the middle of a one-hundred dollar bill. Lame, right? Additionally, I just thought it was better suited as an interesting fact about me, and not the main focus.  I still use my full name in desperate times when I need people to remember who I am…HA!

A lot of cool people call me “B FRANK”, though I don’t advertise that nickname. When I was at the studio, a lot of the rappers would call me that. For the record, its just “Benjamin”.

TCM: Name 2 things you absolutely can’t live without (your cell phone and computer are not options to use)?

BENJAMIN FRANKLIN: My car is a BIG everyday tool. You really take a car for granted until you don’t have one. My voice would be the other. I had some vocal complications last year and for a singer of any kind, that’s some scary stuff! Heck, for a talker of any kind that is scary! I know most people take their voice for granted, but imagine you tried to say or sing something and nothing came out…

TCM: What do you have to say to young readers hoping to blaze the trails into this Entertainment industry?

BENJAMIN FRANKLIN: Everything is not what it seems. Being an Entertainer/Creator is a job just like any other occupation. The only difference (a big difference) is that the rules to become successful in the entertainment business is not as defined and concrete as say, a lawyer, doctor, or teacher. In those occupations, you go to school, get your degree(s) or certifications, find the job, work hard, and climb the ladder.

Well, in the entertainment industry, there are countless ways to get the job and no matter how hard or long you work, you may never move up, get recognized, or even worse, get financial rewards like a simple pay check.  Nothing is guaranteed and success is based upon chance. Also, if you don’t like being judged and you can’t deal with numerous disappointments, you may want to push on the brakes before you even start. That’s just the start for me. I’m sure I’ll have plenty more to share when I step into the major playing field. Most importantly, there has to be strong, resilient love in your heart for performing/creating because money doesn’t buy everything (and you may not get that much of it).

TCM: What are your views on this upcoming Inauguration and how does it make you feel to experience such history?

BENJAMIN FRANKLIN: I’m just happy and optimistic toward the future. I know most people see it as a “first African-American President” thing, which is fine, because I’m very excited about that too, but it felt really good for me to see the best man win. The fact that he won because he was simply the best person for the job says a lot about our government, voters and nation as a whole. Everything should work that way. Imagine how great the World would be if it did. Imagine what awesome shape the economy would be in. Imagine how great music would be…

TCM: Who’s the most influential person in your life?

BENJAMIN FRANKLIN:  I don’t have a single influential person; I’d say I have pieces from many (people). My parents are very loving and giving, which influences me to do the same. My sister believes in me with all honesty, which inspires me to work hard. Music artists like Madonna and Donny Hathaway influence me to be daring and creative while other artists like Toni Braxton and Kanye West inspire me to never give up and always work hard.

TCM: What mantra do you live by?

BENJAMINN FRANKLIN: “Do unto others as you would have the do unto you.” Is that even a mantra? Even if its not, I’m noticing that it’s a golden rule many are forgetting to live by. When you do good (to others), it ALWAYS comes back. Probably not immediately, or obviously but it always does.

TCM: Aside from your own music, what are you listening to right now or in your car?

BENJAMIN FRANKLIN: Ooooooh…,I’m an IPOD/ITUNES fanatic! Brandy’s new album, Human, is in super rotation and Britney Spears’ album, Circus, has been rockin’ the pod too. My favorite new artist that has been getting a lot of play is this guy by the name of Sam Sparro. He’s awesome. I’ve also been feeling this girl by the name Lykke Li. Her song, “I’m Good, I’m Gone” is my current life anthem. There’s a lot more that I’m listening to (I’m an avid music buyer)  but I’ll just leave it at that.

Inside the Life of a Teen Parent

Wednesday, January 14th, 2009

By: Shauna Lanea, Feature Writer

Teen pregnancy plays a significant role in today’s society. Not only do teenage pregnancies interfere with the success in life that these girls and guys might ultimately achieve but teen parents are a burden to all of us requiring far more public assistance than adults. Children born to teen parents tend to be both socially and economically disadvantaged in most cases. In this article, you will be introduced to both a male and female teen parent. As you read you will learn how teen pregnancy has affected both their lives in today’s society.

Can you imagine finding out your pregnant and being a minor? Thoughts of what your parents or family will have to say echo in the back of mind, so you replay the situation over and over in your head. I had the opportunity to interview two teenage girls dealing with this feeling. They are one in the same, sisters and their babies are three months apart. The younger sister Brianna was the first to find out she was pregnant and hid it for 6 months before anyone in here family found out and her older sister Paulette’s situation was a little different. Their mother was upset but learned that there was nothing she could do because the girls made a choice of continuing with their pregnancies and here are their stories.

Meet Brianna Woods, 16 years old and she is a teen parent. Brianna got pregnant at the age of 15 and she said that she had no stable environment to educate her on teen pregnancy. It was her first time being sexually active and she got pregnant when she said they used protection but she was not on birth control. “I felt as if I was pressured by my now ex-boyfriend and now I’m left alone to take care of our son, but with the help of my family,” Brianna said.

TCM: Do you feel like this was a hard choice and how has this changed your life? For the good, bad or both?

B.Woods: In the beginning, it was a regret but looking back on everything I don’t, I just wish I could have post-pone it. Did not think I could do it and I was not ready. I’m never bored, it made my life better but my freedom is limited.

TCM: If you did not have a support system, how would you manage?

B.Woods: I have to take care of my baby the best way I know how. I am currently working right now but at times it’s not enough.

TCM: How does your family feel about teen pregnancy?

B.Woods: They don’t agree, the way they make it seem. They have their days on when comments are made like it’s something I can take back. Then it makes me regret everything. My mom was very upset at me, I felt like she hated me for it.

TCM: What does life after high school entail for you?

B.Woods: I am to graduate from high school next year and I plan on attending college. I want to further my education. That’s one of the positive things my family tells me is to finish high school and attend college. I have to plan a future for my son its not about me anymore.

TCM: While you are in school who cares for your baby?

B.Woods: My mother and grandmother

TCM: Do you have any advice for our teen readers of this issue?

B.Woods: Don’t attempt to do anything if you’re not ready for the consequences. If you’re planning on getting pregnant, make sure you have a solid foundation because kids are expensive.

The next interview you will read is of Paulette Mitchell, an 18 years old teen mother and Brianna’s older sister. She had the hardships of love and lost last year when she lost her boyfriend of 3 years and father of their 5 month old baby girl Tristyn to violence.

TCM: How did learn you were pregnant?

P.Mitchell: I went to the hospital because I had a real bad stomach ache and I had been feeling bad for quite sometime. When my mom and grandmother took me to the hospital, I learned I was 6 weeks pregnant.

TCM: How did your mother react to the news?

P.MItchell: She went from being supportive to being mad and basically everything went down hill from there.

TCM: What’s your support system?

P.Mitchell: I have the help of my family, my boyfriend’s family and myself. My boyfriend was my biggest support system until he was shot and killed about 5 mos ago.

TCM: How does your family feel about teen pregnancy?

P.Mitchell: Actually, I don’t know. They were more mad at my younger sister Brianna because she was 15 and still in high school.

TCM: Are you attending school right now or working?

P.Mitchell: I’m currently working and I will be attending college in the fall, maybe at Texas Southern University.

TCM: Do you have any advice for our teen readers on this issue?

P.Mitchell: If you’re planning on having sex, protect yourself! Being young and pregnant puts your life on hold. Even if the baby is unborn your still risking the baby’s safety and health by having unprotected sex. Having a baby is real and not about fun and games. I love my child and would not change having her for the world, but be smart about the decisions you make. Think with a clear head.

Every time we read about teenage pregnancy, we hear the female’s point of view, so I thought it was time we hear from the males. Meet Rashad Lewis who had his first child at the age of 18. Now at the age of 22 he is a CEO of his own business venturing in Promotions/Marketing and is in his last year of college majoring in Business Management.

TCM: What do you think is the best way to prevent teen pregnancy?

R.Lewis: The best of preventing teenage pregnancy would be to not engage in sexual activity, practicing abstinence. But if you have sex, use protection and take birth control.

TCM: How did being a teen parent affect your future career and/or potential earnings?

R.Lewis: I learned it wasn’t about me and everything revolved around my child to where I put my career on hold and put myself second. All I wanted was to provide for my child allowing her to have what she needed, there’s never a limit on that.

TCM: Why do you think so many teens today become pregnant?

R.Lewis: Lack of education. If parents taught more sexual education, it would cut down on teens wanting to become pregnant.

TCM: What would you have done to prevent your pregnancy?

R.Lewis: Abstinence with the mother of my child.

TCM: In your opinion, what option do you see teens doing more of, as in keeping the baby, adoption or abortion? Did you consider these options?

R.Lewis: No matter the options the mother chose, and told me that she was going to keep my baby.

TCM: Do you have any advice for those teens that are pregnant or wanting to get pregnant?

R.Lewis: Life doesn’t stop it only begins. But it’s a bad idea to get pregant if your trying to keep your mate around. Babies aren’t subject to hold relationships together. If it’s already on the negative side, nothing will get better between the two parents. Its time to think about the baby to be born and time out for patching up relationships.

TCM: Do you have any regrets and if so name one?

R.Lewis: I have none, I just wish I would have waited.

TCM: Now after going through the life lessons of teenage pregnancy, what are your views on before and after?

R.Lewis: I’m not for teen pregnancy but a way can be made. My life has changed completely and every time I look at my daughter I’m happy and I know I chose to do the right thing. She’s keeps me going, I understand that her mother can’t do it alone and I’m going to be there always.

The Fierce Urgency Of Now!!!

Monday, January 5th, 2009

By: Mical. J. Roy, Entertainment Editor

Main Stream music is typically accepted due to its ability to sound and act as the masses often do. Walk a straight line, but seem larger than life, within your own bubble of do’s and don’ts! There are of course, artists who demand to push the envelope by adding the “Imma do me” theory to there list of mantras. Hip Hop loves an artist to give them the REAL, and we (the fans) don’t like to have to wonder what our favorite stage performer is really like when the screams of fans have withered, and the stage lights fade. WE WANT REAL!!! Wait no more chic readers, reality is merely within reach.

Pinc Gator, born to the world, Carl Henderson is certainly to some an enigma of sorts. Perhaps it’s his confusing clothing and shiny gold football helmet, often adorning his head that makes us think he’s nothing like the rest of us. Would it be his gold boots, often symbolic of his beloved organization, Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc.? These are the things that actually address how down to earth he really is. When you sit down for a second with this College graduate and recently married family man, you quickly realize what assists him in maintaining his drive.

Gator, who was recently featured on rapper Lil KeKe’s “Traffic Slowed Down”, is abrupt in letting you know his individuality is something easy to breathe, as it should be. His difference in appearance, showmanship and thorough image is what has sent him spiraling into the music industry. He’s appreciated by Hip Hop hands down, and his moment of clarity is just up ahead.

TCM: Tell us about Pinc Gator vs. Carl Henderson? What are the similarities vs. the differences?

PINC GATOR: Lol!! Well for the most part, the two are completely opposite people. PG is the entertainer, mingler and wooer. There is only so much I can tell you about PG, he is really his own person and most of all love’s reaching people through his music and spontaneous conversation. Carl…that dude there is married and has an 8-5. Pinc Gator cares nothing about an 8-5; he’s just in the streets all the time pushing his music.

TCM: How did you develop the name, is there a story behind it?

PINC GATOR: Look here homey, the name Pinc Gator originated in High School in 1999, no lie. I can’t spoil you with the meaning. Nobody knows but a few people that gave me that name back in the gap. It’s not related to anything derogatory or offensive. I told my wife I’d let her know what it meant when we got married. I haven’t told her yet, maybe when we renew our vows in 25 years.

TCM: If anyone knows you, or has seen you perform, they know you definitely bring the energy! What helps you keep that positive energy?

PINC GATOR: Joe DiMaggio had a saying that went something like this… “Give your all every moment, because that may be the ONLY time they ever watch you, and you MUST make an impact on them”. I just stay fired up. I’m actually at peace and extremely high (not substance influenced) when I’m on stage. Some people ask me what I need to perform, and I tell them straight up, all I need is a mic and some water if that’s not too much to ask…and to cut the check! It is extremely important to maintain enthusiasm in your field, if you don’t do so, there is no reason for spectators to follow or buy into you at all.

TCM: Tell the chic readers something they may never have known about you?

PINC GATOR: For some reason, I have been diagnosed with insomnia, but put in a car as a passenger or pop in any DVD and I’m sleep…straight up! Oh, I got that dance fever…that Chris Brown type of dancing…straight up art work. I only let my wife see that…haha…man I’m trippin!

TCM: Name 2 things you absolutely cant live without (excluding laptop and cell phone).

PINC GATOR: I can’t live without my radio or some type of music device. I’m constantly recording or brainstorming, it’s a MUST!

TCM: Aside from your own music, what are you bumpin’ really hard right now in your ride or on your IPOD?

PINC GATOR: Lil KeKe “Hated by Many, Loved by Few” and not because I’m on track 11 “Traffic Slowed Down”; I actually bang 12 out of 13 songs on that album. I jam Z-Ro, Scarface “Made”, Prince (the old stuff), Outkast, some old 2 Pac, Ludacris, Mordecai, T.I., Ryan Leslie, etc. It’s crazy, my musical rolodex has no order at all.

TCM: Is there anyone in your circle that keeps you grounded? What makes you admire and respect him/her?

PINC GATOR: Just about anyone in my actual circle keeps me grounded. Although I’m outgoing, my circle is extremely tiny. Realistically it’s not even enough people to make a circle. My folks mainly grew up with me, so they know how to get their point across and vice versa. Each person close to me has different qualities that I selectively admire. The admiration ranges from spiritual, wisdom, education, and is rarely financial because that’s on the way. I’m claiming that along with my canary yellow Lamborghini with “Roo” stamped on the back…IT’S REAL!

TCM: If you could do anything else in this lifetime, in terms of occupation, what would it be?

PINC GATOR: LOL, man I’d be the illest singer. I’m always singing a song. I may not know the words, but I rock out. You know how it is when you don’t know the rest of the words and you fill in and keep it movin’? I briefly sing on my music. Check out a track of mine called “A FIX”, I sing on the whole joint. www.isound.com/pinc_gator

TCM: Who’s your stylist, or how did you develop your style? Is it a culmination of many people, originality, or both?

PINC GATOR: No stylist. If I ever had a stylist, we would not get along because I honestly wear what comes to mind. I may change Gator gear 38 seconds before going on stage. My get up is emotional and I follow no trends. I just wear what I like. I have been wearing a vest with no shirt, cut off jeans and cowboy boots since I was in Elementary, that’s been my groove and I would even sleep in it. I don’t think twice about what’s hot. What’s hot doesn’t fit Pinc Gator.

TCM: Where do you see yourself in 5 years with your music?

PINC GATOR: Musically, I should be at least 4 to 5 major albums deep with a humongous following and constantly on tour making that great cake. Also, I should have some classic bangers under my gator skin belt. To make it plain, this (music) gotta work out ASAP; I’m not impatient, just hungry.

TCM: Where can we hear more of your music?

PINC GATOR: Pincgator.com, isound.com/pinc_gator, youtube.com/pincgator, Best Buy and anything other store that has Lil KeKe “Hated by Many, Loved by Few”. Google.com and search Pinc Gator. If you say you can’t find me, go slap yourself with both hands.

TCM: How do you feel being apart of this Presidential history? What can you tell Chic readers in regards to this political turning point?

PINC GATOR: It’s definitely a major move for American in regards to progress racially. I honestly never thought this would happen in my lifetime. I believe there will be numerous positive jumps in education, and employment. The ladder will take place just on people making an individual effort instead of making excuses. An African-American as the President is enough to motivate people of all races, because it is clear that anything is really possible. We as people tend to look for a scapegoat when we are in an unpleasant situation.

Obama, whether you support him or not had a few strikes against him to start in my opinion. His name Barack-strike, Hussain (are you serious)-strike, Obama-strike, Black-strike, lack of military experience-strike. In all these things, the brother still won without sabotaging a whole state. POWERFUL, whether you’re with him or not.

TCM: What are your thoughts on the importance of a good education?

PINC GATOR: You must strive to get a good education. That alone can potentially put you in places you couldn’t previously imagine. Education is essentially more than what the teacher shows you. It is going beyond normal measures to seek knowledge of what’s important and what strikes your interest. Some say if you don’t know, don’t go. I say, if you don’t know, find out and stay prayed up while you are seeking, so that you will know the truth when you find it. Man, I just love life and the adventures that come and gone as well as the unknown which lies within us.

I greatly appreciate you all taking the time to talk to little old me. You too are my motivation. Until we meet again, stay prayed up and go to www.pincgator.com.

Funny or Embarrassing?

  • Eggs

My cousin and I were bored one summer at our Grandmother’s house and we had literally exhausted any and everything to do. We watched a movie earlier and there was a scene where these kids were throwing eggs at cars and my cousin and I were both cracking up on how the drivers were reacting to the eggs falling from the sky. So I thought it would be a good idea for us to play our own egg throwing scene on the cars that drove by and my cousin agreed. We stuffed our sweat shirts and pockets with eggs and proceeded to the end of the drive way to put our plan into play. Cars start to drive by and we start to throwing them and when the cars would stop we would start playing hop scotch. We got away with it for about 6 cars until our Grandmother yelled out, “Stop throwing my eggs at those darn cars!” We were in so much trouble to where we got a whippin’ from our Grandmother and our parents.

  • Timber

It was my first day of High School and the entire 9th grade class had to meet in the gym for an introduction of the staff and administration. My mother was running late that day and when I got to them gym there was no seating except for the very top of the bleachers. Being that I am deafly afraid of heights, I just knew there was no one I would be at the top of the bleachers until a teachers directs me to the very top. I was mortified and begged and pleaded with her to just let me sit on the floor but she would not hear it. I proceeded up the steps, praying every step of the way that I would not fall backwards; I made it to the top. The bell rung and it was time for us to go to our first class and I was glued to my seat. I had just made that journey up the steps and not even 15 minutes later I had to go back down the steps but this time in a crowd of people…I nervously got up and started to coach myself down the steps and after three steps, I felt comfortable that I was not going to fall until the boys behind me started pushing each other and one kind of fell on me. Having no sense of balance, I began to tumble face forward down the bleachers and I even took out 3 other students with me. I was so embarrassed that I got up and ran into the bathroom in an attempt to regain my composure but as soon as I walked in to class those same guys were in and my name was TIMBER for the rest of the year.

  •  The Tutor

Math is my worst subject and my teacher suggested that I got to tutorials provided by the school. Caring not to ask the details of the tutorials, I just showed up in the classroom that I thought it was in to find one other student. After of about 5 minutes of no one else coming into the room I asked the guy, “What time do tutorials start?”, and he said that it started right after school. Waiting and waiting some more, I realized that I had been there 30 minutes already and there was not a tutor in sight. The principal walks in and says, “I hope you two have learned your lesson and I won’t have to see you back in detention.” I began to sink in my chair as I thought I had been waiting there for a tutor when I really served my first after school detention.

  Blind Date

Some friends of mine from high school decided to hook me up on a blind date with this guy that they promised was perfect for me. They totally set everything up to my outfit and where all I had to do was show up at the restaurant. Overly anxious, I was on the phone with one of my friends when this guy that I have a huge crush on from my church walks into the restaurant. I spoke to him and he sat at a different table alone and I assumed that he was waiting on his girlfriend. After 10 minutes of waiting, I started talking to my church member and we really began to hit it off to my surprise. Both of our dates showed up after being 15-20 minutes late and we were forced to entertain them. Not feeling my blind date at all, I excused myself to the bathroom to call my friends to tell them that I would much rather be with my church crush than what they set me up with. As soon as I headed back to the table, my crush approached me and said, “Let’s get out of here,” I agreed and we both ditched our dates. My crush and I left, we went to my favorite restaurant and we went bowling and talked all night. It was the best date of my life and my friends still throw it in my face of how I ditched that guy.

HAPPY CHIC NEW YEAR EVERYONE!

The staff and I are really excited that the launch of our magazine has been so successful but with GOD on our side we would not expect anything less. Seeing that we ended 2008 on such a high note, it was only right for us to start our 2009 season with this issue of New Year, New CHIC You.

Our Fashion department stepped their game up on this month’s photo shoot, using antique cars and the SMOKIN HOTTEST clothes from C.R.O.S.S. by J. Phillips and Snooty Girl Boutique. You will see the models with some suit cases symbolizing out with the old and in with the New CHIC You!

Our very own, Audreyanna Garrett, will be reporting live from Washington, D.C. to see such an historic event this month with President Elect Barack Obama and Shauna Lanea’ will cover the touchy issue of teenage pregnancy. Stephanie Catchings is your number source for Health and Beauty and Mical J. Roy always has his ear and heart to the streets as for Entertainment (he always has the 411). Please comment on the articles and let us know what you think!

It has been brought to my attention that there are some people that are claiming to be Teen Chic Magazine. Chic readers, please don’t be fooled but the REAL TEEN CHIC MAGAZINE is the one that you are reading right now. Our OFFICAL WEBSITE is www.TeenChicMag.com, our OFFICAL BLOG SITE is www.TeenChicMag.ning.com, our OFFICAL MYSPACE is www.myspace.com/teenchicmagazine and we can also be reached via Facebook under groups. Any other media or source is not the real Teen Chic Magazine and is not owned or affiliated with So Chic Media Group.

On another note, special THANKS to Beyonce because…I’m a DIVA! Enjoy.
