♥ B O Y S ♥

Thursday, February 12th, 2009

By: Kelli Matthews, Intern

As we all know February is the month for cupid to work his magic. This is when people decide to stay together, break up, or find that quick fix from being alone. But the QUESTION of the month is:

“Do guys expect gifts from their girlfriends on Valentine’s Day and if so what do they want? Is Valentine’s Day not considered at ‘girls’ holiday?“

Kris - 15
Yes, I do expect a gift of course for Valentine’s Day. It is a girl holiday but it’s basically an excuse for girls to get gifts.

Richard - 16
No, I don’t expect a gift on Valentine’s Day. Valentine’s Day is a girlie holiday but guys have feelings too.

Shadi - 16
No, I don’t expect a gift at all on Valentine’s Day. I think it is a pure girl thing and that it is a ridiculous holiday; just another reason for a girl to get a gift!

Malcolm - 18
Yes, I kind of expect a gift because I always get one (LOL). I think that Valentine’s Day is a girl and guy holiday to celebrate love.

What Stinks

My church has Vacation Bible School every summer and my parents always make me go no matter what. Normally I would just throw on some clothes, never putting forth much effort for my outfit. To my surprise, there was a new guy in class and all of the girls were trying to talk to him. I looked like a total bum so I tried not to bring any attention at all to myself and I promised myself that I would step my game up for the next day. The next day, I rushed home from soccer practice, took a shower and started piecing together my outfit for later on that evening. Arriving at Vacation Bible School that night I was ready to put my bid in with the new guy because I was looking pretty hot. It just so happened that the A/C went out at our church and after sitting in my class fanning myself like crazy I realized that I had not put on deodorant. I tried to play it off but I was starting to smell and people were starting to notice. I ran out of class and stayed in the bathroom the rest of the night because I could not face anyone.

Never Again

My second semester of my junior year in high school and our school received the hottest guy that could ever transfer to our school. It just so happened that when his parents came to check him into to school was my office period so I was officially the first girl that he met from our school and being that he was so-ooo cute I had to make a good impression. While his parents filled out paper work, the Assistant Principal asked me to show him around the school. The bell rang and we began to cruise the halls and I was beginning to like him a little more than a crush. Well, I was totally into the conversation that me and the handsome transfer were talking about that I totally bumped into someone because I was not looking. It turned out that the person that I bumped into was my boyfriend and I was nervous and embarrassed that I forgot my boyfriends’ name. Once I got back on my feet I said, “This is Steve a new transfer to our school and I am just showing him around the school.” I began to try to introduce my boyfriend to the new guy and my mind went blank! All that would come out of my mouth was, “Steve, this is…this is…my boyfriend.” My boyfriend was so upset that I forgot his name that he broke up with me right then and never spoke to me again. Needless to say that nothing ever popped off with the new guy because of that but we are still good friends.

Dance Off

Our schools talent show is like the biggest thing that goes on at our school since I attend a school that does not have any sports. My friends and I thought with all of the craze of America’s Best Dance Crew on MTV, that we should put together our own crew for the talent show. Our school already has a well known all guy dance crew that is in the talent show every year and as soon as they heard about our all girl crew the mess talking began. My crew and I began to practice everyday and we were positive that our crew would be the winner of the talent show. The day before the talent show the guy crew was talking so much mess during lunch that they started free styling. I guess the guys were so pumped and confident that they started doing flips and they ended up hurting themselves. The guys ended up getting disqualified from the talent show because of the disturbance they caused at lunch. Needless to say, we won the talent show and for the rest of the year the guys kept trying to make us do a dance off and we still won’t give them the satisfaction.

Makeup Tips for Valentine’s Day

Thursday, February 5th, 2009

By: Inez T.S. Woody, Feature Writer

Valentine’s Day is a special day marked by love. Chocolates, flowers, candies, jewelry and greeting cards are exchanged to express one’s love. Whether or not you have a boyfriend, nothing should stop you from having the most fun possible channeling your inner gooddess. So don’t fret if a romantic date is not on your agenda. You can “Pretty it Up” for yourself, a girl’s night out or for your special Valentine. Glamorous makeup is the key to living this holiday to it’s fullest. Focus on girly colors like pink, peach, brown or even purple. Make sure you do not over do it! Instead, pick a feature and focus on it.

ALL ABOUT THE LIPS:

A pouty lip is the look to go for that will stop traffic, but the key is making them kissable and not goopy. Always apply a lip balm with at least SPF 14 before hand. Although red may seem like the way to go for Valentine’s Day, it can be a bit too much. For a hip look, take a pink fuchsia shade like Sephora’s Cream Lipstick in #67 ($6.00 on Sephora.com), put on a coat and then quickly blot most of it off. Next, very gently run a thin coat over your bottom lip and press your lips together for a perfect look that’s not over done.

Cargo, PlantLove Botanical Lipstick, is environmentally friendly and the design is the cutest little Valentine’s Day tube is so adorable. It is silky smooth, conditions and colors your pout to pucker perfection.

A SMOKY EYE:

A smoky eye is a must ; however you do not want to lay it on too thick. As you get older you can work your way to using darker colors but in the meantime, enjoy playing with whimsical colors that look best on you. First, apply BADgal Lash Mascara in rich black, it really builds up huge lashes. Then you can line your upper and lower lash with a dark brown pencil (Sephora - Slim Pencil, Eye in Dark Brown 212) to make your eye more defined. You can use a really light shimmery pink on your brow bone like Hard Candy Eye Candy in Cotton Candy for $12.50 and then use a slighty darker shade of pink in the crease of the eye.

Finish off the eye with a dark brown eye shadow right on your eye lid with Urban Decay Eyeshadow in Stray Dog which you can find on Sephora.com for $16.00. This total look will create a pink inspired but yet smoky eye that will have you looking smokin hot! Remeber to choose a smoky eye or a pouty lip but not both because you do not want to over do it.

No matter if you have a beau or not, celebrating Valentine’s Day can be fun wether you are having a fun and romantic date or a night out with your girls. Be beautiful and try not to break too many hearts!

Presidential Inauguration 2009

Sunday, February 1st, 2009

By: Audreyanna Garrett, Feature Writer

Nineteen degree weather was not enough to keep millions of Americans away and it definitely was not enough to deter me.  As we awaited the initiation of this historical event, our minds fiercely battled our physical resistance to continue to stand and endure the Inauguration of the 44th President of the United States of America, Barack Hussein Obama.

I had the pleasure of experiencing this monumental occurrence with millions of Americans differing in race, religion and creed.  We gathered in peace, shared uncontrollable emotions and smiles for we all shared a common passion.  The passion of witnessing the United States of America grow; witnessing this countries founding principles emphasized.  We shared the feelings of finally believing that We, The People, of the United States of America can effect change in this country.  We stood together to witness the promise, as President Obama vowed, in all sincerity, to guide this country out of recession, and to encourage Americans to call upon our ability to effect and encourage change.  Through President Obama’s words he spoke of change but with that came the harsh realities of past decisions.   As Obama states in his inaugural address, “Today I say that the challenges we face are real.  They are serious and they are many.  They will not be met easily or in a short span of time.  But know this America-they will be met.”

These words, spoken in confidence, sincerity and adoration restore the hope that always resided in American hearts submerged by fear.  We shall clasp to these words in desperate times.  We believe in our President’s promise and that is why this Presidential Inauguration drew such a crowd.

“Our challenges may be new. The instruments with which we meet them may be new. But those values upon which our success depends — hard work and honesty, courage and fair play, tolerance and curiosity, loyalty and patriotism — these things are old. These things are true. They have been the quiet force of progress throughout our history. What is demanded then is a return to these truths. What is required of us now is a new era of responsibility — a recognition, on the part of every American, that we have duties to ourselves, our nation, and the world, duties that we do not grudgingly accept but rather seize gladly, firm in the knowledge that there is nothing so satisfying to the spirit, so defining of our character, than giving our all to a difficult task.”

-President Obama-

The strength of heart and character of America was defined by the many individuals whose physical stamina demolished over the hours and were involuntarily forced to retreat.

With President Obama’s encouragement tears were shed with hope of prosperity for all.  President Obama’s heartfelt presence etched great cheer in the hearts of millions.  And even though we stood ten, hundreds, thousands of feet and watched miles away, we felt like he stood side by side.
