Unprofessional

I had just got hired to work at one of Houston’s biggest law firm’s for the summer and I was totally excited. Being that I had never worked in any thing professional besides a fast food joint, I had absolutely no clothes to wear to work. So I remembered that my older sister had bags full of clothes that she was throwing away out of her closet but they looked perfectly fine to me. I found a pair of grey slacks and a alright button down shirt to wear for my first day at work.

When I walked into the firm, I felt like I was well put together until after my first staff meeting of the morning. I walked in the only seat was the one closest to the big boss of the firm. I sat down and I begin to hear my pants rip…Talk about embarrassing! To make things worst I dropped my pen on the floor and when I reached to get it buttons popped off my shirt. So picture me with my chest all exposed, trying to hide it by writing notes to block the cleavage that was pouring out of my shirt. I wanted to crawl into a hole and just die!

The meeting was just about done and I thought that I was home free until the boss asked me to stand up and introduce myself…What do you do? Do I expose my chest for the entire firm to see and risk that being my first and last day or do I risk everyone behind me seeing the purple heart panties that I wore that day…Tough decision, I know.

So I stood up slowly as not to draw any more attention to the peep show that I was giving to the people behind me, with the note book in front of my chest and I introduced myself. As I began to sit down the boss tells me that I might want to excuse myself to call my Mom. What would posses him to say such a thing because I thought my introduction was perfect??? I couldn’t hold back the tears and I began to walk out of the meeting when he says, “You just need to tell her that you need a whole new outfit because that shirt and those pants in that condition are unprofessional.” I wanted to drop off the face of the earth as I thought I was getting fired.

Old Rules for the New School

Friday, April 10th, 2009

By: Inez T. S. Woody, Feature Writer

Prom Etiquette

With Prom season upon us, every girl aims to be the most poised, beautiful and envied at the Prom. It is of course the most important dance if high school senior year. It is one night where you are more dressed up than you have ever been, with gorgeous dresses and suits and everyone is eager to watch you drive off into the sunset for the most anticipated event of senior year. It’s all about the dress, hair, make up, shoes and of course, accessories! But more importantly, your date. Will you take your high school sweetheart, a neighbor, the boy in your 3rd period Biology class, ot have you no clue at all? Either way, prom should definitely be a night to remember.

Times definitely have changed, but please know that proper behavior is always in good taste no matter what generation you belong to. I know you’re shaking your heads thinking, here is another “It ain’t like it use to be” and “Back in my day” stories, but please know that it was only (ah-hem) a little over ten years when I attended my senior Prom. ☺ Trust me, that’s not that long ago. I am very positive you will look absolutely glamorous and stunning on your big day so I won’t bore you with tips on material lavishness and which color is hot this year but my goal is to remind you of a few tips for prom etiquette.

- You don’t have to have a date to the Prom. Go solo, or with friends. There’s no reason to miss out just because someone did not ask you.

- If you have not been asked, you should probably ask your potential date to the Prom a month in advance to give them time to prepare.

- Dress appropriately. Know the difference between tasteful and “over the top.” (Would hate for you to not be able to go into the the Prom because of your outfit…)

- It’s proper for the guy to buy his date a corsage.

- It doesn’t matter who drives, or whether you rent a limo. Rented cars are not a requirement. If a parent ot older sibling has a nice car and trust you, it will definitely be cheaper but make sure you’re responisble.

- It’s Senior Prom! Don’t stand around looking at each other at the Prom. Make sure you DANCE! However, if you dance with others, be sure your date gets the first and last dance of the evening.

- Do not forget your manners. Whether you want to believe it or not, manners and etiquette are highly important when it comes to the Prom.

- Do not create Prom drama. Drama arises from dress to date choices and everywhere in between. Do not be the one to stress it! If things really do get bad for you or your feelings get hurt, take a break and get some fresh air. Things will work out in the end even if they turn out to be different than you imagined.

- Do not be late! I know that you want to make an entrance, but all of that hard work should not go to waste and you do not not want to be left behind either.

-  Do not feel pressured into doing anything you do not want to do. Whether it’s having sex, drinking alcohol or doing drugs. Remember, it’s your night to remember and you want it to be a pleasant memory.

- If you’re attending an after-party at someone’s house or hotel room, please be respectful. No loud behavior and no destruction of property. Be especially respectful of your hosts’.

Remember the bottom line is to adopt rules of etiquette that promote mutual respect, support safety and security, while maintain personal dignity. These ideals never grow old. You want it to be an experience that you can treasure for a lifetime. Have fun on Prom night! Be fablous but more importantly, be responsible. Do not behave in a manner you will regret later. Relax, have a good time and enjoy your friends, after all, Senior Prom is once in a lifetime.

Ryan Leslie: Music Supremacy

Tuesday, April 7th, 2009

By: Mical J. Roy, Entertainment Editor

Most who know me, know that I’ve been forcefully pushing 29 year old Ryan Lesile’s latest self titled release. I only amplify things that I believe in and his latest album is surely food for the hungry music lover.

To date, R. Les has actually had quite a history in the industry. He initially got signed in 2003, but like most truly talented artist’s, he had a rough start and was essentially overlooked and not taken seriously by the industry.

His latest release, “Addiction” featuring rapper Fabulous hasn’t really helped to truly catapult his name and his edge, but hopefully critics have listened to his album and are taking notes. Lesile has produced for artists such as Beyonce, Danity Kane and Cassie.

Ryan Leslie - New Music - More Music Videos

He boasts that he doesn’t drink or smoke, and that his creativity comes from being in the studio and immersing himself fully into his music.

Lesile states that an addiction can be anything that makes you feel some type of way, but for him its music. Music is what drives him and assists him in reaching the masses who otherwise may not have even heard of him.

Music is what lead him to tell his parents on the day of graduating from Harvard University with a degree in Economics at the age of 19, that he would much rather pursue his passion for music. Leslie graduated in 4 years and he was 15 when he entered college.

Please checkout Ryan Lesile, believe me, I’m not just talking about an album or an artist I know nothing about. This guy is certainly going places and you can check him out on his website at www.RyanLeslie.com, YouTube and MySpace at www.MySpace.com/ryanleslie.

Songs on his album like “Gibberish” or “Valentine” really tell a tale of an artist with so much creativity and energy exerted fully into this music. Leslie, in my opinion doesn’t desire to rest among the commonality that we are starting to see more and more these days. On this album I sense love, hate, confusion, swagger, happiness, peace of mind, subtlety, a touch of “over the top” here and there, quite possibly ALL OF THE ABOVE. It’s an interesting, jamming, inspirational album. I get the sense that music has a chance when I listen to this album. TRULY!!!

Ryan Leslie - Well before his time, however, we should appreciate his early arrival.

TURN IT UP!

What’s Your Sexuality?

Tuesday, April 7th, 2009

By:  Audreyanna Garrett, Feature Writer

In the last five years we have seen this generation greatly experiment with sexuality.  More teenagers are engaging in same sex relationships and are more confident and open with their decisions.  It seems as if this is the most popular homosexuality has ever been amongst middle and high school students.  So we question, “Is it more or less a ‘fad’?”  Is it more openly experimented because it is more widely accepted?  In this article I will ask the question most of us know the answer too and others ponder assumptions.

More teenagers are open to the experiences.  I know when I was in school homosexuality existed but it was not confronted.  It was ignored by those students who did not partake in it.  No, I do not believe that those students who choose to be homosexual were not denied friends but I believe that their thoughts would have been that they were scared to put their sexuality in the face of other students.

When I questioned a recent graduate of  Willowridge High School, “Why do you think that homosexuality is common amongst your generation?” She replies, “I think it’s because it is so widely exposed now and about two years ago same sex marriage was as an option; with certain laws that are passed, it is no longer prohibited.  People are not getting stoned anymore.  It is on TV more often, there are no longer penalties for homosexual scenes.  There are more homosexual parents raising children and it’s ok.”

A general assumption is that we are not as provocative enough when discussing sex to all children and teenagers.  The more we leave to question the more they want to explore.  The exploration is taken to another level when children and teens are not properly sexually educated.  With that being said, nothing taught to me by professors in Sexual Education class could have prepared me for the real thing.  But I was also never pressured or influence to experience same sex relations.  The one question left unanswered is, “Is pressure a factor in the popularity of homosexuality amongst teenagers?”

Maybe you can help me answer that question…

Spring “White” Etiquette

Sunday, April 5th, 2009

By: Chanteau Garrett, Fashion Editor

It’s now April 2009 and we can now finally celebrate the season of spring. I’m sure that we have all heard of the rules, “You can start wearing white on Easter,” and “You’re not to wear white after Labor Day.” Furthermore, it also pertains to white pumps and/or white dress shoes. While exempting, white tebbis shoes and off-white boots that are suitable to wear during this time. We know that “winter white” clothing consists of cream colored wools and linens, which is acceptable  between Labor Day and Memorial as well.

The logical reasoning behind wearing white is that it reflects light and heat, and wearing white also make you cooler in the winter time.  There is one key chic rule that I would like you to remember when wearing white.

Always wear nude color under garments

Wearing nude under garments while wearing white ensures that your underwear will be disclosed when wearing pants, dresses and skirts.

Try to always stay clean, remember that white does stain easily and there is nothing like seeing children and adults in soiled whites. It takes away from it’s classic, clean and pure look. Make sure that you iron your whites because a wrinkle is immediately recognized and I’m sure that you always want to preserve your sexy as Diddy would say.

It is spring  so enjoy your white, look nice, fashionable and most importantly chic!

Happy Spring Teen Chic Mag Readers!

Prom Hair 101

Thursday, April 2nd, 2009

By: Stephanie A. Catchings, Health & Beauty Editor

The date is getting closer which means that the amount of time you have left to pick the perfect “do” to go with your fabulous prom dress is running short. Consider these 8 tips for choosing the right look to make you glamorous and chic from “hair”  to toe.

1.  Look at the mood of your dress. Is it dressy and elegant or laid-back and Bohemian?

2.  Consider the shape of your face, round and square faces are brought out by up-dos. Oval shaped faces are complimented by long hair that frames the face or a half-up, half-down hairstyle.

3.  Keep hair away from the necklineof you dress if it is a focal point so that the attention to detail can be admired by all.

4.  Check with your hair stylist to be sure that he or she can do the style you want by showing them a picture. If they are unable to style your hair they way you want, have them recommend someone who can so that you won’t be disappointed with the styling experiment.

5.  Try the style out before the big day to be sure that you are not showering the dance floor with bobby pins or sporting sticky, droopy curls in the pictures.

6.  Work with the natural texture of your hair. Play up your curls or waves by shaping them with moose or promade and accenting them with a matching flower or simple diamond clip. Please remember that Tiaras at prom are no longer chic!

7.  If you plan to use hair extensions for your perfect look,  please seek a professional who can secure them and make them look natural so that people can recognize you and your beauty - not your beautiful tracks of hair showing through the curls.

8.  Wear a button-down shirt to the hair salon to protect your tresses from the t-shirt mess up.

Prom is all about fun, so be sure to get your hair done in a style that suits you and your style. That way, twenty years from now when you and your children look back at your prom pics, you won’t have to offer any excuses. You can proudly say - I was CHIC!

A Last Dance

Thursday, April 2nd, 2009

By: Shauna Lanea, Feature Writer

One of the reasons Alcohol Awareness month is held in April is because it is the beginning of the prom and graduation season, a time when celebrations can turn dangerous for underage drinkers. Many communities conduct anti-drinking campaigns during the month aimed at curtailing alcohol use before during and after the special events. Consequently, prior to prom, many schools plan programs aimed at educating kids against the dangers of drinking.

These programs feature special speakers, presentations and even displays of crashed vehicles to emphasize the danger. Some groups utilize some form of a “sober contract” a promise that students sign agreeing to remain alcohol and drug free during the prom and graduation season. At the event itself, many schools across the nation have begun using breathalyzers to test the blood alcohol content of prom-goers and turning away at the door those who have been drinking.

Parents talking with their teens about drinking on prom night should be part of an ongoing conversation with them about the hazards of drinking. Recent statistics only affirm parents’ concerns about teenage consumption of alcohol and prom night has been seen, in recent years, as a drinking rite of passage for some adolescents. Unfortunately, many adults turn their backs on or indulge in underage drinking, especially around special events like the prom. Some parents feel they have little to worry about as long as their kids aren’t drinking.

Every single injury and death caused by drunk driving is totally preventable. Although the proportion of crashes that are alcohol-related has dropped dramatically in recent decade, there are still far too many such preventable accidents.

To Play or Not to Play

Wednesday, April 1st, 2009

By: Kelli Matthews, Intern

Now ladies, I know we have all had our share of good and bad relationships. It is understandable that all things just can’t be good. Now don’t get me wrong, I’m not saying all relationships end badly but sometimes guys can bring you a little extra stress wondering if you’re there number one girl.  So the big question that I want to know is, are guys really afraid of commitment??? Take a look and see what I found out.

Do you think that most guys are afraid of commitment, which is why they’re such players sometimes?

“Yes and no but sometimes guys can’t help it because they get a lot of attention from other girls. So it’s hard for them to handle it and then on the other hand, it’s hard for some guys to make a commitment because it’s hard to stay in a long term relationship.”

“No, because we’re not afraid of anything. With commitment you have to deal with liability to the girl and hear you can’t do this and you can’t do that, so why be tied down when I can have the world.”

“Honestly, I don’t think most guys are afraid of commitment it’s just that, some guys just don’t want to settle down. Some guys like to have variety in their life but that’s usually the immature guys though.”

“I don’t think guys are afraid of commitment, I think their sexual desires require more options and when they have a variety, their desire is for filled to their satisfaction.”

New Body, New You

STAYING FIT WITH BRITT

Have you ever looked in the mirror and said, “Man I look fat!” Well, you are not alone, 7 out of 10 teens have felt insecure about their body image one way or another. In today’s society, Glitz and Glamour has become an ideal life style for teens around the world; however does this “Glitz and Glamour” define who you are as an individual? As a teen growing up in a fashion forward time period, personal image is a major part of my social life.

Here are my 7 STEPS to a HEALTHIER LIFE!

Step1:
Surround yourself with positive people

♥ They will help you stay motivated and keep you on a positive track.

Step 2:
Determination and Will Power

♥ Stay determined and positive, challenge yourself to create your “perfect” body image.

Step 3:
Have Confidence

♥ Set a realistic goal and ACHIEVE IT!!!

Step 5:
Make Better Choices

♥ Choose the BEST foods to stay CLEANSED physically, mentally and emotionally in balance.

Step 6:
Cook More and Eat Out Less

Step 7:
Active Life

♥ Make time to exercise at all times. For example, instead of taking the elevator, take the stairs.

These steps are not here to establish your PERFECT body, but rather a guide to help you achieve what you feel is “staying fit.”
