Cut-Throat or Genuine?

FRIENDSHIPS AT BOARDING SCHOOL

You walk by that girl in your dorm, she smiles nicely and says hello. Later that day, you spot her sitting with her best friends in dining hall whispering and glaring at you. You are not quite sure if she’s the friend you thought she was.

Friendships at boarding school are different than friendships anywhere else in the world. Some people believe that the competition to succeed interferes with the relationships that you form with friends. Others love everything about their friends and would not trade them for the world. After speaking with a number of students who requested that their names not be mentioned, I was able to find out more on the subject.

A junior mentioned that she believes the academic competition at boarding school both hurts the friendships as well as makes them stronger. She said, “The competition can motivate you to excel in your work, or it can make you want to kill the girl. It depends on the kind of person you are.”

In contrast, a freshmen said that all the people she has met are genuine so far and she does not see competition affecting her friendships. However, this could be debated, as the prep has not been at boarding school long enough to have to deal with the college application process and other competitive ordeals.

On a different note, a few of the people interviewed said that they felt as if their “friends” sued them for homework. Is it possible that people are now backstabbing their friends for grades, instead of the usual boyfriends? A different junior mentioned, “I know a girl who only speaks to me when she needs help with her work. If I say ‘hi’ to her on the paths, I get no response.” That is not always the case though. Many students at boarding schools are truly happy with their friends and would never use them.

Friendships in an environment where you are with people all day, every day, progress more rapidly than anywhere else. Annoying habits may surface sooner and gossip spreads faster than it takes to get from the dining hall to your first class. It all depends on the friends you choose to hang out with and whom you trust. However, being with your classmates this much can also be an amazing experience that leads to memories that will last forever.

3. Get a summer job

Find something easy and fun for you to endure go the entire summer; i.e. work at an amusement park or water park, favorite fast food chain; or better yet find a job in a potential career field.   Explore internship opportunities at your dream job of choice.  It’s never to late to plan for the future.  Start now, open a savings account and save money.

ANDROGYNOUS: BOY MEETS GIRL

You have seen it before in magazines and on television, the “menswear look.” This season designers have created chic clothing for women inspired by men’s style. This clothing has been plastered in magazines and showcased on runways lately because this look is timeless.

Tuxedo tops, “boyfriend” jeans, ties, over-sized button up shirts - these clothes are “handsome” and certainly make a statement. However, it is important to maintain feminism and not look too much like a boy while pulling off this look. Flattering, slim tailoring as well as a few feminine accessories gives this trend a twist.

On the other hand, boys can add a softer and more refined touch to their style by choosing subdued tones such as pink or yellow or finer fabrics like silk or cashmere. This can be worn through dress shirts, vests, blazers and ties; either tied with a full, ostentatious Windsor or a sleek skinny - if you want to stand out, go for a unique bow-tie.

Cuff links can also add a touch of elegance to an outfit. Looking polished is not a question of losing masculinity can be easily maintained by pairing softer items with a favorite pair of worn-in jeans or boat shoes. Accessorizing with belts and watches can finish the look.

What Body Type Are You?

Friday, June 19th, 2009

Let’s face it ladies, whether you are at school, the mall or even shopping at the grocery store, it never fails that we all ways see that one person that is dressed totally inappropriate for their body type. Which leads us to ask the question, “Why is she wearing that?” Our Fashion Editor, Chanteau Garrett has taken the time to break down your style secrets to help you stay chic at all times.

Curvy Hips

Your Style Secrets

Draw eyes north with bold or light colors on top and dark shades on bottom.

Broad necklines (boatnecks-or off-the-shoulder shirts) equalize your figure.

Jackets, long cardigans and dress shirts worn open create a lengthening effect, minimizing the appearance of wider thighs.

A drape-detail wrap dress enhances your bust while minimizing curves below.

Petite

Your Style Secrets

Baggy clothes have a body-shrinking effect. Ensure fit; get things tailored if need be.

Be creative with waistlines: Drop-waist tops make torsos look longer while high-rise bottoms add inches to legs.

Too billowy a blouse or dizzying a print can overwhelm. Classic, structured shapes concoct an illusion of tall and narrow.

A refined sheath creates a continuous line from shoulders to knees.

Busty

Your Style Secrets

Foundation is key: Invest in a good bra with sculpted cups and sturdy straps to maintain allover smooth lift and to prevent side bulges.

Avoid bulky turtlenecks, which make you look heavy from the waist up.

Subtle accents on top complement décolletage while bold details (like yes, stripes) add unwanted volume.

Black on top minimizes, and a peek of what lies beneath is plenty.

Boyish

Your Style Secrets

Enhance a smaller chest with necklines that expose a bit: Pick ones with a flirty dip, like a sweetheart or a deep V.

Add curves to narrow hips by wearing a thick, low-slung belt with jeans or trousers.

Experiment with new fabrics, lick boucle or ones with sequins that give a little dimension to a straighter figure.

A cinched-waist, full-skirt dress.

Full Figure

Your Style Secrets

By keeping the silhouette close but not snug to your body, you look trimmer that you would trying to hide under baggy clothes.

Dark palettes minimize, but you can also go lean with bright, monochromatic hues.

Too tight sleeves accentuate arm bulge. Fabrics should skim upper arms. Bell sleeves are always chic too.

Boot-cut jeans downplay shapely thighs.

Hourglass

Your Style Secrets

Accentuate your profile with a few pretty belts and cinch everything (from dress to blouses) at the small of your waist.

Jersey and silk lightly graze curves. Wool and tweed add bulk.

Defined, structured shoulders and exposed necklines (think V-neck and strapless) flatter busts.

Showcase broad shoulders and narrow waist with an inverted triangle front panel on a strapless dress.
