UNKOMMON KOLOR

Wednesday, November 11th, 2009

by Audreyanna Garrett, Published Author & Features Editor

There are people in the world who take matters of the world, matters of the heart and matters of the soul and bring them to life through art.  There are designers who take the emotions and re-create them in wearable form.  Unkommon Kolor is that HAUTE NEW design team.

Mr. Jeremy Biggers, member this design team, monitors closely new fashion trends and develops concepts and creative designs that depict what people want.  How they want to look.  How they want to express themselves.

Jeremy Biggers, in a recent interview:

TCM: So that everyone is familiar with Unkommon Kolor and the unique derivation of the name, could you please inform us of how you all define Unkommon Kolor?

JB: Essentially we are a heavily art themed lifestyle brand that primarily focuses on t-shirts and custom hats and shoes.

TCM: Including yourself, who are affiliates of Unkommon Kolor?

JB: Bryan Blue “Blue the Great”: Owner, Designer, Marketing Team

Jeremy Campbell “Jaye Cartel”: Owner, Designer

Jeremy Biggers “The REAL Jeremy Biggers”: Owner, Designer, Photographer, Marketing Team

Arif Merritt “The Scientist”: Web Designer, Designer

Krisaela Fraizer “Pretty Flaca”: Seamstress, Designer

Eric White “Senior Blanco”: Designer

Samantha Mattice-Lowery “Sam… with the Hair”: Designer

Mercedes Fulbright: Intern/ Marketing Team

Maricela Diggs: Intern/ Designer

TCM: What is your role in the company?

JB: I am the third owner of Unkommon Kolor.  I am also the photographer, designer, and marketer within the team.

TCM: Where can we purchase Unkommon Kolor merchandise?

JB: As it stands now you can only purchase the merchandise on our website, www.unkommonkolor.com  (unless you get it from one of us directly)  We are in the process of working with some boutiques in Dallas, Houston, LA, and possibly some other markets such as Miami, DC, NY, and Philadelphia.  We just need to finalize a few things.

TCM: This is a teen magazine so we do encourage; what would you say to encourage TCM readers?

JB: Well the main thing we encourage is being yourself, and realizing who you are is “good enough”.  Be the best you can be and NEVER take no for an answer.  If you can think it, you can do it.  Finally, “Live today like there is no tomorrow.  Learn like you will live forever.” Ghandi.

TCM: Will TCM be able to use Unkommon Kolor in the next photo shoot?

JB: We are more than happy to make that happen.

TCM: What is next for Unkommon Kolor?  What new design inspirations?

JB: We have quite a few things in the works.  Most of which we can’t discuss as of yet.  We will be dropping a HUGE line in January so we’re waiting on that.  We have some contests coming up that only members on our twitter page and blog will know about.  So, just follow us on twitter @unkommonkolor and the blog is http://unkommonkolor.blogspot.com/.

BABY PHAT/PHAT FARM PREMIUM 2009 FALL/WINTER COLLECTION

Sunday, November 1st, 2009

By: Clarence McMill, Entertainment Editor

I was so impressed with the major upgrade that Kimora Lee Simmons has made with her clothing line especially “Phat Farm Premium” which is the new name since Russell Simmons handed that to Ms. Kimora. I first saw the line at New York Mercedes Benz Fashion Week February 2009 and instantly fell in love with it.

I personally feel that Kimora has executed the whole new “URBAN” look of everyone going completely “GOTHIC”. She has made it very easy for any hood female and male to adapt to this new dress code/lifestyle. I did not get to take pictures of the entire line only what the showroom would let me get my hands on. If you would like to check out pictures from the Baby Phat/Phat Farm Premium NYMBFW February 2009 go to www.nymbfw.com or go to www.phatfarmpremium.com see what’s in for this Fall and Winter.

Special Thank you : Natalie Hinds, Jason Anderson (for letting me pull the clothes), Mia Marcus (photographer), and the models Dorian Micheals (DNA Male Super Model), Solomon Cortes (Music Producer/Recording Artist), Sandflower Dyson (Songwriter/Recording Artist), and Natlia (Recording Artist).

USE THE PUMP WISELY!

Thursday, October 29th, 2009

By: Audreyanna Garrett

In our world we know that pumps are fashion accessories that are used inappropriately a lot of the time.  We need to know when to utilize the pump, how and when to just pull out the pump or the sandal to make the outfit work.  In this article you will witness the proper execution of pumps and some good examples of when to choose an alternate style.

Pumps will always be classic basic shoe. They are generally appropriate in very formal and professional settings.  The pump is always a hit when paired with any pencil skirt or dress that lingers above, at or below the knee. It creates a modest, classic and clean look that gives you a since of chic’ ness.

You can however make the pump fun, but it is tricky to accurately execute this look.  For instance, a shorter, tight fitting dress should never be paired with a pump.  It makes the ensemble look cheap and cheesy.

Long sleeves should also never be paired with pumps. Here Jessica White looks as if she got her entire out fit from the seven dollar store which you would want to always avoid.

Here Adrienne successfully utilizes the pump.  She makes it fun and sexy and keeps it tasteful.  However, this look does not look right on everyone so you have to be careful and know what your body looks right in and how to accessorize.

Please be sure to remember these tips when daring to use the PUMP this Fall.  It could be or bestfriend or worst enemy.

Transition from SUMMER to FALL

Friday, September 4th, 2009

 By: Chanteau Garrett, Fashion Editor

The summer is practically over and we are about to enter into the fall season. You may be wondering how you can get the most out of your summer clothes going into the fall season? TCM has provided you with some helpful tips on how to transition from summer to fall with these helpful hints.

Lightweight cardigan during the cool summer nights a light cardigan keeps you warm, you can now use that same cardigan as a layer piece for the fall season. Great with layer tanks, t-shirts and long sleeved shirts.

A belt
will give you a spin on your outfit embellish any dress or cardigan of your choice to make a statement. Let see your bust, waist, and hips this fall season. Make sure you do not go overboard with your belt but keep it interesting and appealing to the eye.  There is no reason to go out and buy a brand new outfit when you can just walk in your closet to a refreshing new outfit.

Platform ankle booties are a great accessory paired with the same skirts and dresses that you wore in the summer. Add opaque tights to your outfit when it gets cooler with a stiletto ankle boot and it will give your outfit the look of fall and a hint of classic chic to it.

A ruffled blouse  is light and cool for those days during the summer now you can turn up the heat and accessorize with studs and grommets. Ruffled blouses are great when paired with slacks and a pencil skirt for work or skinny leg jeans and your platform boots for after work activities.

ALL TIPS LISTED ARE TEEN CHIC MAG APPROVED!

Stay Dry Not Wet In The Summer Heat

Friday, July 31st, 2009

 By: Chanteau Garrett, Fashion Editor

This summer’s heat has hit an all time high, with the sun blazing, humidity, no rain and heat advisory. I am sure a few people are sweating their butts off in this crazy heat. Not to worry, because Teen Chic Magazine is thinking of you and I want to help give you a little insight on what colors to wear in the summer heat. I know you want to look HOTT and not a HOT MESS. The key is to have a pinch of CHIC with outfits that eliminate the sweat stain and focuses on the beauty of the clothes.

Ditch the jeans and trade them in for shorts, skirts and sundresses it is summer and its time to let your legs breathe a little.

The basic light colors that absorb sweat/water are gray and other pastel colors.

It is very easy to see stains on light colored clothing so try to wear dark colors T-shirts if you sweat since dark colors do not change color at all.

I  want to look you guys to look your best in what you are wearing so lets think smart and wear darker shades of colors so we can look fresh, neat, clean and not tacky and unpleasant. Have fun in this summer heat and remember to stay dry, safe and dehydrated.

ANDROGYNOUS: BOY MEETS GIRL

You have seen it before in magazines and on television, the “menswear look.” This season designers have created chic clothing for women inspired by men’s style. This clothing has been plastered in magazines and showcased on runways lately because this look is timeless.

Tuxedo tops, “boyfriend” jeans, ties, over-sized button up shirts - these clothes are “handsome” and certainly make a statement. However, it is important to maintain feminism and not look too much like a boy while pulling off this look. Flattering, slim tailoring as well as a few feminine accessories gives this trend a twist.

On the other hand, boys can add a softer and more refined touch to their style by choosing subdued tones such as pink or yellow or finer fabrics like silk or cashmere. This can be worn through dress shirts, vests, blazers and ties; either tied with a full, ostentatious Windsor or a sleek skinny - if you want to stand out, go for a unique bow-tie.

Cuff links can also add a touch of elegance to an outfit. Looking polished is not a question of losing masculinity can be easily maintained by pairing softer items with a favorite pair of worn-in jeans or boat shoes. Accessorizing with belts and watches can finish the look.

What Body Type Are You?

Friday, June 19th, 2009

Let’s face it ladies, whether you are at school, the mall or even shopping at the grocery store, it never fails that we all ways see that one person that is dressed totally inappropriate for their body type. Which leads us to ask the question, “Why is she wearing that?” Our Fashion Editor, Chanteau Garrett has taken the time to break down your style secrets to help you stay chic at all times.

Curvy Hips

Your Style Secrets

Draw eyes north with bold or light colors on top and dark shades on bottom.

Broad necklines (boatnecks-or off-the-shoulder shirts) equalize your figure.

Jackets, long cardigans and dress shirts worn open create a lengthening effect, minimizing the appearance of wider thighs.

A drape-detail wrap dress enhances your bust while minimizing curves below.

Petite

Your Style Secrets

Baggy clothes have a body-shrinking effect. Ensure fit; get things tailored if need be.

Be creative with waistlines: Drop-waist tops make torsos look longer while high-rise bottoms add inches to legs.

Too billowy a blouse or dizzying a print can overwhelm. Classic, structured shapes concoct an illusion of tall and narrow.

A refined sheath creates a continuous line from shoulders to knees.

Busty

Your Style Secrets

Foundation is key: Invest in a good bra with sculpted cups and sturdy straps to maintain allover smooth lift and to prevent side bulges.

Avoid bulky turtlenecks, which make you look heavy from the waist up.

Subtle accents on top complement décolletage while bold details (like yes, stripes) add unwanted volume.

Black on top minimizes, and a peek of what lies beneath is plenty.

Boyish

Your Style Secrets

Enhance a smaller chest with necklines that expose a bit: Pick ones with a flirty dip, like a sweetheart or a deep V.

Add curves to narrow hips by wearing a thick, low-slung belt with jeans or trousers.

Experiment with new fabrics, lick boucle or ones with sequins that give a little dimension to a straighter figure.

A cinched-waist, full-skirt dress.

Full Figure

Your Style Secrets

By keeping the silhouette close but not snug to your body, you look trimmer that you would trying to hide under baggy clothes.

Dark palettes minimize, but you can also go lean with bright, monochromatic hues.

Too tight sleeves accentuate arm bulge. Fabrics should skim upper arms. Bell sleeves are always chic too.

Boot-cut jeans downplay shapely thighs.

Hourglass

Your Style Secrets

Accentuate your profile with a few pretty belts and cinch everything (from dress to blouses) at the small of your waist.

Jersey and silk lightly graze curves. Wool and tweed add bulk.

Defined, structured shoulders and exposed necklines (think V-neck and strapless) flatter busts.

Showcase broad shoulders and narrow waist with an inverted triangle front panel on a strapless dress.
