OBAMA’S STUDENT ADDRESS

Thursday, October 29th, 2009

By: Audreyanna Garrett

With the great amount of evolution that has taken place in United States to date, we could never get away from the fact that we are still a mass of individuals.  Individuals that possess and express individual views and opposition.

At no one point in time will every American agree with the President.  There maybe some issues in reform that I may disagree with but neither of us, outside of the Presidential Cabinet, possess the knowledge needed to execute such an immense position.  The job description and characteristics necessary to make up that of the President of the United States of America are so unique that only a select few possess them, which gives the explanation as to why there is only one every four to eight years.

Do I think that President Obama’s decision to address the student body was a bad idea?  No I do not, but what I will say is this; it is always nice to have positive reinforcement of the importance of education.  There are so many aspects of society that are deterring our own from furthering their education, that if we, we being “WE the people of the United States,” do not encourage our own, who will?

There were alot of assumptions that President Obama wanted to address the student body with hopes of influencing political views and positions.  This is ridiculous.  I am not one for assumptions; you can not form a sound opinion on that.  I know that when I was in school, if the President decided to address the body, we researched the topics, viewed when televised, and summarized the experience, at its conclusion, as a whole.  There was no OPTION.

The President’s decision was indeed respected, although it may have been ridiculed on a lower level, it was always respected.  I would hope that as Americans we stand behind our President.  Because regardless, no one party, no one race nor one gender of persons got President Barack Obama elected alone; we all did.

Transition from SUMMER to FALL

Friday, September 4th, 2009

 By: Chanteau Garrett, Fashion Editor

The summer is practically over and we are about to enter into the fall season. You may be wondering how you can get the most out of your summer clothes going into the fall season? TCM has provided you with some helpful tips on how to transition from summer to fall with these helpful hints.

Lightweight cardigan during the cool summer nights a light cardigan keeps you warm, you can now use that same cardigan as a layer piece for the fall season. Great with layer tanks, t-shirts and long sleeved shirts.

A belt
will give you a spin on your outfit embellish any dress or cardigan of your choice to make a statement. Let see your bust, waist, and hips this fall season. Make sure you do not go overboard with your belt but keep it interesting and appealing to the eye.  There is no reason to go out and buy a brand new outfit when you can just walk in your closet to a refreshing new outfit.

Platform ankle booties are a great accessory paired with the same skirts and dresses that you wore in the summer. Add opaque tights to your outfit when it gets cooler with a stiletto ankle boot and it will give your outfit the look of fall and a hint of classic chic to it.

A ruffled blouse  is light and cool for those days during the summer now you can turn up the heat and accessorize with studs and grommets. Ruffled blouses are great when paired with slacks and a pencil skirt for work or skinny leg jeans and your platform boots for after work activities.

The Orphan

Wednesday, September 2nd, 2009

By: Clarence McMill, Entertainment Editor

If you have not seen this movie, what the hell are you waiting for?

If you are into horror/thriller movies this is a must see. I went on a date about 2 weeks ago and this boy just kept nagging me to go on a date. Then the infamous question comes “well what movie do you want to see?”. After observing all my options I needed to watch a movie that would grasp my attention from looking at this person I went on a sympathy date with.

I didn’t have any expectations at first but after 15 minutes into the film, I was hooked. I tell you this little girl is truly cold hearted, no feelings, selfish demon. I’m not going to spoil the movie for anyone but I will say this. I am so not looking to adopt any kids no time soon possibly not ever after this movie.

LADY GAGA AND KANYE WEST WILL TURN THIS WORLD “GAY”

Wednesday, September 2nd, 2009

kanye-west-and-lady-gaga-partied-together-at-foxtail-in-hollywood

Kanye West like gays and he doesn’t care. He is prepping to hit the road with Lady Gaga , which is set to be one of the biggest tours of the year. Both artist are international superstars, and have a phenominal following. Lady Gaga expressed this to Kanye before she agreed to the tour:

“I just want it to be clear before we decide to do this together: I’m gay. My music is gay. My show is gay. And I love that it’s gay. And I love my gay fans and they’re all going to be coming to our show. And it’s going to remain gay. I very much want to inject gay culture into the mainstream, It’s not an underground tool for me. It’s my whole life. So I always sort of joke the real motivation is to just turn the world gay.”

RIHANNA is running NYC

Tuesday, September 1st, 2009

By: Clarence McMill, Entertainment Editor

So I get the chance to hang out with Rihanna every now and then, now that she has moved to NYC for the summer currently finishing her 4th studio album yet to be titled and also currently taking acting classes for a new horror filmed that I believe is schedule to be released in mid 2010 or 2011 don’t quote me on that though. I don’t ever reveal my sources of how close I am or how I met any celebrity, unless if I am working for them and no, I do not work for her.

I just can’t understand how ridiculous paparazzi are when she is in town. Yes, I understand when you are a celebrity it comes with the territory, but there has to be limits. NYC has never really been a city known for paparazzi chasing celebs unlike L.A. who is infamous for that. But either these photographers are banking a lot of money off of there pictures to travel, or people are just selling out cause the recession has hit that hard and TMZ does not make it any better. These guys are on bikes, double parking their cars, ride on the side walk, run people over, knock babies over, kick strollers, you name it they do it all for a picture.

You would think they are football players or money is falling from the sky. The law really needs to step in and lay down the law before it gets any worst, also another prime example is what just happened to Jay-Z and Beyonce. Overseas on their vacation and just because the security guard was doing his job, protecting them, and making sure that they were enjoying themselves. At the time they did not want to take any pictures. The pops loose it and start throw objects and his camera trapezoid at the security guard, when is it going to end?

JAY-Z Covers XXL Magazine and Interview Snippets

Tuesday, September 1st, 2009

“I’m not hating on young people. Like, when people say that, I’m like, What are you talking about? It’s just stupid. I’m not hating on young people… I’m not Bill Russell, [saying] Michael Jordan ain’t shit. I’m saying Lil Wayne and Kanye are like LeBron and Kobe. My job as someone at the forefront of the game is to leave it in a better position than when I came in. Same way that Russell [Simmons] left it to me. ’Cause this thing saved my life. Literally. So I have a responsibility to it karmically. And after that it’s on you. I did my part. I made ‘D.O.A.’ I said it. I made the statement. I made the push. Here, y’all take it from here.”

HIS STANDING IN THE GAME

“But when I say I’m the best, I don’t say that outta my ass. I say that with all my stats behind me. I put that against anybody. I mean anybody. I really believe that… I believe in a lot of things.
I believe that ‘SportsCenter’ is the best thing on TV. I shouldn’t have to prove it. But I do have these stats to prove it. I’m talking about real run. I’m not talking about years off. I’m talking about straight—boom, boom, boom—back to back. We’re not talking about heritage acts either. We’re not talking about respect what I’ve done. I’m talking No. 1 [albums] 10 times. The Beatles is the only one [to have more
No. 1 albums]. They got 19, and if I get a surge of creativity, I could make nine albums next year.”

INTERVIEW: KRYS IVORY

Monday, August 17th, 2009

Interviewed By: Clarence McMill, Entertainment Editor
Written By: Dashaun Moody

Born into a religious family with her father being a pastor and her mother a missionary, it was only natural that Krys Ivory would be blessed with a heavenly and soulful tone.  Excercising her vocal chops in her early life through gospel,  Krys’ mainstream musical colors would soon come to light and seperate her brilliance from the rest in 2006 on a track titled “My Life”.

It would be one of the first features that would showcase Krys’ raw talent in an industry filled with aspiring stars. Possessing an undeniable creative spirit, Krys not only can belt out an uplifting melody but, she can also dance, write, draw and act.

Tell us, growing up when did you realize that you wanted to be an entertainer?

KRYS IVORY: I started getting up and singing at my father’s homeless ministry when I was only 5 years old.  People would be so touched that they would come up to me crying and tell me things like “You have blessed me in a major way, God gave you a gift use it.” I knew then on that singing was something I needed to look into (laughs).

So who were some of your musical influences that you would say molded you into the artist you are today?

KRYS IVORY: I grew up listening to everything from Toni Braxton, En Vogue, Mary J Blige…to The Mamas And The Papas, Jimi Hindrex, Joni Mitchell, Donnie Hathaway.  But, the one person who made a major difference in my life in such a REAL way was Barbara Streisand.  I got the opportunity to sing for her when I was in a gospel group.  She took a liking to me during our time spent with her.  And she gave me some real solid advice as well as words of wisdom.  She told me to never give up and to keep trying.  She also said to love myself.

Are there any hot artists out there right now who you’d like to work with that you haven’t yet?

KRYS IVORY: There a million artists that I want to work with (laughs).  But, I mainly want to work with Raphael Saadiq, Kanye West, Danja Handz and want some of that feel good music from the West to come back. Like DJ Quik’s “Balance and Options”.  I want people to feel good about buying an album again.

Now, I have to congratulate you on overcoming your recent battle with cancer!  But, was there ever a time during your battle that you considered giving up on your dreams of becoming an entertainer?

KRYS IVORY: Thank you!  During my battle I never gave up!  There were times when I said, “Well what if I die?” I told myself I’d rather die trying (laughs)!  You should’ve seen me!  I’d throw on my wig, draw on my face, I had lost my hair, eyebrows, eye lashes and go out and perform! I knew that God had his arms around me.

What advice or words of encouragement would you give to others battling cancer who are afraid to either continue going after their dreams or even go after their dreams at all?

KRYS IVORY: It’s so important to love yourself!  Take that extra mile and do your make up even when you don’t feel like it.  Get your self a cute wig!  Have fun! And regardless of what the doc says, get your butt out! Go have fun with the ones you love!  Go to the beach!  If you sing, go sing!  If you dance!  Go dance! If you write!  Go write!  If you draw!  Go draw! NOTHING CAN STOP YOU BUT YOU!  I know there is the risk of infection but, if you dont nurture your heart then you will grow sicker!  Never give up on your dreams! And if you can’t do them now then try from where you are! Get on that computer and tell somebody your story!

Ryan Leslie Intros Krys Ivory @ Cal State University from Ryan Leslie on Vimeo.

That was beautiful!  So, now on to some more lighthearted stuff, what about a boy makes you just want to stop and sing?

KRYS IVORY:Oooh Weeeee! You asked the right question.  A man who loves the Lord!  I also love a man with an incredible smile and sense of humor!

Fashionably speaking, would you consider yourself a stiletto diva or a kicks chick?  What are some of your favorite pairs?

KRYS IVORY: By day I’m such a L.A. girl with my kicks.  But, by night fall I turn into a DIVA (snaps)!  My heel game always needs more additions!

So, what’s your must have fashion piece of the summer?

KRYS IVORY: Lots of gold chains!  I love boho jewelry.  I always have on accessories and lots at that!

Tell us something about you that we wouldn’t expect?

KRYS IVORY: I’m a great freehand artist!  I draw super hero’s, cartoons, and I also oil paint.  I even tag (graffiti) a little.

What’s the future of Krys Ivory?

KRYS IVORY: I’m working on a very special project right now, call it my “PRE ALBUM Release”.  It’s gonna be special remixes that make you feel good. It’s in the beginning stages but, I can tell you that it will have alot of big features so BEEEE PREPAARRRRRRED (laughs)!  On another tip…the future of Krys Ivory is paving a way for young girls who lose their way, runaways, broken homes, to find themselves through what God gave them.  I want to encourage young girls to love themselves.  The media can be full of such lies and tear down the self esteem of so many young women out there.  I want to round house kick Chuck Norris style these lies in the face.  There is no certain way that a woman should look.  Your beauty will shine when you love yourself.  I plan on being an ACTIVE example to my fans.  I’ve already teamed up with “The Living Beauty Cancer Foundation”, “LoveCuresCancer”, and “The Aneisha Brookes Foundation”.  It wont stop there!  I’m going in folks! Time to make a difference!

Change

Wednesday, December 24th, 2008

By: Audreyanna Garrett, Feature Writer

Most are aware that Obama’s campaign was situated to bringing great CHANGE for America. Have you taken the opportunity to enlighten yourself on what that CHANGE entails?

Obama’s plan for America is greatly encouraged by his motivation to encourage Americans to believe that we can influence change and encourage better alternatives in Washington.

In unanimity with Biden, Obama has constructed several new plans that cause for restructure of education programs through the establishment of programs and schools that emphasize early education. The Obama-Biden plan for education includes the implementation of the “Zero to Five plan.” This plan will encourage early education for infants and toddlers to ensure that they are ready for kindergarten. Obama would like to issue grants to promote pre-school admissions.

“No Child Left Behind” is a plan that will restructure curriculum so that it is not solely structured on excelling on standardized tests. The assessments will be revamped to detect each individual students progress to appropriately determine their readiness for the subsequent institution, whether that is middle school, high school, specoalized academies or college. As far as education on a collegiate level, Obama will implement creation of a tax credit in exchange for community service so that college is more affordable and accessible for Americans. This will encourage higher education and develop an incredibly necessary standard.

Obama will provide economical reliefm through tax cuts, the creation of jobs, support of small businesses, reduction of mortgage fraud and many additional plans of action. Obama believes that the redirection of tax cuts from wealthy Americans to the middle class working families will provide Americans with a well needed relief and equality will be reinstated to the tax code. He will jump start the economy with the implementation of a Windfall Profits Tax* to supply $1,000 of immediate assistance to aid with rising bills, the Emergency Energy Rebate. Obama also wants to provide 50 million dollars to the economy to prevent 1 million people from loosing their jobs. He plans to eliminate income tax for senior citizens making less than $50,000 per year, simplify filing for middle class Americans, eliminate bankruptcy loopholes for mortgage companies and raise minimum wage.

President Elect Barack Obama has proven to the United States of America that he is a man of great intelligence and moral fiber. As it is important to elect Presidential Candidates on character, it is equally important to be in tune with your candidate’s views on the country’s issues. Continue to educate yourself on the issues because you have the power to promore great change.

“I’m asking you to believe. Not just in my ability to bring about real change in Washington…I’m asking you to believe in your.”
-President Elect, Barack Obama

Verification of this information along with more information on Obama’s Plan for America can me found on www.barackobama.com/index.php

*A higher tax rate on profits that ensue from unexpected profits (i.e. lottery, inheritance, etc.)

Nuttin BUT Stringz!

Saturday, December 20th, 2008

By: Mical J. Roy, Entertainment Editor

Violins have always been associated with high class debutantes and their driven socialite mothers who force them off to Julliard in the blink of an eye. An instrument that exudes the utmost in poise, dignity and class. Its never been thought of as an instrument that could bring funk, soul, and dare I say Hip Hop into the picture. Or has it?

A couple of days of playing phone tag with the publicist for these Jamaica Queens, New York born brothers, I was starting to doubt my real potential. I’d spoken with there PR Reps via e-mail several times, and we’d agreed upon a date and time. A couple of times, they’d call me and I’d miss the call, and when I called back I couldn’t reach them, and so we’d start again from square one.

Damien and Tourie Escobar of Nuttin but Stringz were introduced to me on accident, but then again, I’m often under the assumption that this was by no means a mishap. On an easy night I was sitting at home flipping through channels as I often do, in search of something good to watch on TV. I’d recently purchased a barbecue pit, and stopped flipping through the stations so I could check on the meat I had on the grill. I must have stopped on America’s Got Talent, another reality show where contestants compete for a title and win a lavish prize.

As I closed the top on the barbecue pit, I was summoned to the television by strings and what sounded like musical thunder. I immediately sat there on the couch in total shock, as I witness two young men, playing these violins as though they were base drums, or a saxophone. It was mind blowing, and as I sat there, I realized, like so many others, I was hooked. Not hooked on the show, but hooked on what I’d just witnessed. I had to find a way to get in touch with these violin twins, a name I gave them before I realized they were just brothers who looked almost identical.

That night, I pulled their website up on my laptop, in search of more information. Perhaps the whole world knew about these fellas, and it was I, who was late. I was quickly brought up to speed, as I learned there journey didn’t began on America’s Got Talent, much rather this was a bit of a mid point. Nuttin but Stringz got their big break in 2005 when they entered a local talent contest at The Apollo in Harlem, and won. Since then these men, have been anywhere from, The Tonight Show, with Jay Leno, all the way to The White House.

Back to square one, and this time, I’m sure it will come to pass. I sit patiently on my patio, watching the skyscrapers downtown. The sun has set, the sky is hiding amidst the silver lined clouds, and amidst the jazz blaring from my 1920’s inspired record player, my cell rings. “Mical Roy”, his publicist solicits. “This is”, I rebuttal. “OK, I’m going to connect you to the guys ok” and I tell her, I’m ready to roll. Just like that, the phone clicked, and there they were. I’d just watched them on TV what must have seemed like minutes ago, and now I would be interviewing them for all the chic readers.

TCM: How long have you all been playing the violin?

Tourie: Well, ummm about 12 to 15 years.

TCM: What would you say inspired you to get into it?

Tourie: We had to take it in our Elementary School, it was a requirement and the love for the instrument just kept that motivation going.

TCM: So okay tell me, where did the name come from?

Tourie: Well really when the time came that we needed to establish ourselves as musicians, we knew we needed to come up with a name, and we threw around nuttin but skillz, nuttin but success, and we really liked Nuttin but Stringz, so that’s the one we chose to ride with.

TCM: That’s interesting man. Tell me, what can you tell our readers about the importance of voting?

Tourie: Awe man, it’s like this, you know especially the way the economy and the world is right now, its important that we go out there and express ourselves through voting.

TCM: How important is family and education to the both of you?

Tourie: Family and education is very important. It’s family that helped us when we didn’t want to get up and pursue that education. If you’re not educated you won’t be able to get out there and have certain things. When you feel like dropping out, it’s your mom that’s telling you, you can do it. Having a strong solid family foundation is the key.

TCM: I know that your mother had to be your biggest fan, how does she feel about your talent?

Tourie: Ya know, we were raised by two strong beautiful black women, our mother, Gloria Ponder, and our aunt, Gayle Ponder. Right now, they’re real overwhelmed by the response that we’re getting. From the start because Nuttin but Stringz has been around for awhile, but once we started doing it, it gave them a reason to walk around with their head up and be proud of their black sons.

TCM: Name something that you cant live without?

Tourie: I can’t live without my violin (Damien yells into the phone he can’t live without his daughter).

TCM: How have you guys dealt with friends or schoolmates who may have tried to taunt you all for the instrument you’ve decided to play and how would you tell our teenage readers to deal with negativity from peers?

Tourie: You’re gonna go through it, but “we need more leaders”. In order to be a leader, you have to “put your stamp on it”. We’ve heard it all, sissy instrument the whole nine, but at the end of the day, you have to believe in yourself. People will be people, and there will always be naysayers.

For more information on Nuttin but Stringz please visit them at www.nuttinbutstringz.com and/or email them at nbsbookings@gmail.com.

Stay Chic. Stay True.

My vision for Teen Chic Magazine started when I was 12 years old, hanging out with my cousin Kristal as I often did growing up. It was a lazy Summer day and we were laying on the floor flipping through magazines, taking the quizzes, mocking the models poses and trying to think of a solid plan on how we were going to get the latest fashions that we knew our parents could not really afford or just would not normally buy.

Something in me, felt like something was missing in all of the magazines that we were flipping through. Education has always been very important in my family and while seeing the latest fashions was always a treat, I wanted a magazine that could convey the importance of education, fashion, politics, health, beauty and entertainment into one. There was something else that was greatly missing as well…minority faces. I was a teen reading magazines geared for teens that did not have any people that looked like me in the entire magazine and not just me but any minorities at all.

From that point on, I made it my dream to create a magazine that was sorely geared towards minority teens and Teen Chic Magazine was born. As a big sister and older cousin, I feel that it is imperative for teens to have positive role models to be able to look up to and along with having a gateway of unlimited information that is strictly geared towards helping them achieve their dreams. Thanks to Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton, it doesn’t seem so far fetched when we hear little girls and little boys say that they would like to be the President of the United States when the grow up because the possibilities are endless.

Thank you for taking the time to read our magazine and we would love to hear from you. Please send questions and inquires to info@teenchicmag.com and a Teen Chic Magazine Staff Member will contact you. Please stay tuned for our January issue as the the fashion shoot is smoking hot!

Happy Holidays to everyone and remember to LIVE in GLAM and DREAM in CHIC!

♥,
